Description

Burning fossil fuels to produce electricity has contributed to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.  It has become imperative that we continuously move forward in developing and using sustainable energy technologies such as wind, sun and tides.  This video and accompanying worksheet explores six types of renewable energy and the benefits and challenges associated with capturing and using each form.  As students learn how the use of naturally replenished energy sources can help solve the climate change crisis, they will be motivated to consider how they can also become responsible environmental citizens by reducing their own power use at home and school.

This resource supports Grade 4-9 Science learning about renewable and non-renewable resources, technologies that collect and transform energy and the environmental impacts of electricity production.  The video also encourages discussions about sustainability, energy efficiency and carbon footprints.

 

The activity could become part of an expanded project in which students use Science and Mathematics skills to conduct a school energy assessment. The audit results would support a class proposal for a school action plan with simple conservation strategies like turning off lights in unused rooms or using programmable thermostats to reduce heat when the school is empty.  This plan could be presented to school officials to demonstrate how school energy efficiency would save costs while benefiting the environment.
