The energy consumption assessment offers students an opportunity to get the whole picture on their school’s energy use. The procedure has 4 steps:
Step 1: Collect electricity consumption data. Students will reach out to various sources within the school community and record electricity consumption data in the School Energy Consumption Assessment Worksheet provided.
Step 2: Collect data and information on other energy consumed by your school. Students will investigate what other forms of energy are used in their school and brainstorm how various factors may impact energy consumption.
Step 3: Analyze your data. Students will gather with their team to analyze their data. Discussion questions are provided to help students.
Step 4: Identify target items and outline strategies. Students will use the EcoSchools Energy Conservation Action Plan provided to help translate the valuable information they have gathered into practical energy conservation strategies for their school.
Conducting a school energy consumption assessment can be highly educational and impactful. This approach would allow science classes to use real data collected by the students to teach about energy, its sources, and environmental impacts.
