Tuyen's Tremendous Trash Tour - Book 5

Elementary

Description

Earthly continues her travels to Hanoi, Vietnam where she meets her friend Tuyen to explore the local landfill. Climbing the mountains of trash with Tuyen's sister Minh, they learn that not all garbage belongs at the dump. Although the whole experience was smelly and gross, Earthly and Tuyen are excited to spread the word that we must all consider reusing, recycling or reducing our garbage. The health of our planet and ultimately our own health depends on the waste disposal choices we make.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This story provides an excellent introduction to the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) and teaches students about what types of garbage are produced by humans. The book also supports Science outcomes related to human impacts on air, water and habitats.

Extending the learning into an action project would reinforce student understanding of where trash goes and provide an opportunity for a class to engage in environmental citizenship. A waste audit would inform the school community about how much unnecessary garbage is generated on a daily basis in the cafeteria, classrooms and offices. This information could be the basis of a school action plan for garbage reduction with regular monitoring by students to gauge success.
