These outdoor activities and workbook aim to connect students with their local environment. They will learn about local wild plants and traditional and modern uses of plants in everyday life.
In Activity 1, the students will learn the parts of a plant and use this knowledge in a sensory observation activity outside where they will observe a plant up close and record their observations.
In Activity 2, the students will complete a photosynthesis experiment by placing identical plants in two different locations (sunny window and a closet).
In Activity 3, they will explore the uses of plants as food, tools, medicine and in art. As a continuation of this activity, the students will complete a drawing of the plants they ate the previous day and one thing from every room in their home that comes from plants.
The focus of this resource is to help students appreciate their natural world through sensory observations.
This resource would be an excellent introduction for younger students to the plants and the related vocabulary in order to provide a solid foundation for the study of plants in a Grade 3 and Grade 4 Science classroom.
