Healthy Air Versus Polluted Air Quality is a short activity that focuses on the causes of air pollution and how air quality effects our health.
The activity begins with a class discussion of what affects air quality both positively and negatively. Next the students watch the video "Air Pollution 101". Afterwards, they participate in a breathing exercise in which they breath through a straw both prior to and following exercising in an effort to simulate breathing with asthma The activity concludes by discussing global solutions to the air quality problem.
The activity is well suited for the middle school Science classroom with a focus on climate and the effects of human activity on the Earth. It could also be used to support the teaching of outcomes that address body systems, specifically the respiratory system.
