This resource explores the environmental impact of our food choices. Aided by a slide show and video students learn about food miles and the different environmental impacts from growing, transporting and preserving food. They conduct research to determine the carbon footprint of some common food products and debate which one of four types of tomatoes available in our grocery stores is preferable. Students then consider what steps consumers can take and what tools are available to help them make more sustainable food choices.
While focused directly on the environmental impacts of consumer choices in today's global food system, the resource effectively supports teaching about the climate crisis and the concept of ecological footprints.
