A Forest is a beautifully illustrated picture book best suited for the early elementary classroom. With its vivid colours and easy to understand text, students are introduced to the concept of deforestation and the importance of caring for the forests.
The story begins with a forest untouched by humans. It progresses with the humans cutting down some trees but being responsible and replacing what they took. Soon, however, the humans begin to take much more than they need and only replacing the trees with buildings. The air becomes unhealthy and a storm comes along that washes the city away. The resilience of the forest is highlighted at the end as a single tree remains from which a forest once again grows.

This book introduces to young students the importance of forest conservation. The book is best suited for an early elementary classroom. It could be used as a read aloud for the youngest students followed by a discussion centered around deforestation. Older students could write a follow up to the story depicting what happens next and then read their stories to a younger class that has also read the book. The book could also serve as a springboard for an art project with different sizes and kinds of trees. The students could take what they have learned and create an awareness campaign for others in their school and community. The book could also be used to highlight the theme of resilience as a topic for Health and Wellness.
