You Are the Land

Elementary

Description

You Are the Land is a wonderful read-aloud book for the early elementary classroom. The book via a rhyming text and beautiful watercolor illustrations reminds the reader that they are a part of the world around them. Each page compares the reader’s body to the plants, the animals and the four elements. The content is inspired by the Physical quadrant of the Anishinaabe Medicine Wheel. This book is the second in a series, “All That You Are”. Each book in the series depicts a different quadrant representing one kind of wellness along with a diagram and description of the Medicine Wheel. Also included are Anishinaabe Connections, which share more about Anishinaabe art, culture, and traditions explored in the text and illustrations.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

You Are the Land is best suited for the early elementary classroom. It has themes that could be used to help attain the curriculum outcomes related to literacy, ecosystems, Indigenous knowledge and traditions, and wellness. The teacher could extend the learning by taking the class outside to discover other ways in which students are connected to the land and have them write their own class version of the story with illustrations.  The book could also be used in conjunction with Earth Day activities.
