The World Habitat Day resource is a flexible four-activity guide that addresses the importance of biodiversity. Its aim is to provide students with achievable actions that they can take to support the natural habitat that surrounds them. The activities can be completed individually or as a unit.
Activity #1: What is Biodiversity? The students will watch a video and brainstorm reasons why biodiversity is important to them. They will share their ideas with classmates and make a poster with words or pictures to illustrate their understanding of the issues.
Activity #2: Exploring Your Habitat. Students watch a second video entitled “Why restoring Indigenous land rights is important for the planet”. Afterwards, they participate in a nature walk to explore, observe and collect information about the plants and animals they find. There are reflection questions to be considered after the walk both individually and as a group.
Activity #3: Organisms at Risk. The students watch another video that discusses “Endangered Animals”. They then will choose an endangered animal to research and complete a worksheet that is provided to summarize their findings.
Activity #4: Art4Biodiversity. Students observe and discuss selected pieces of art created by other children. They will then discuss what biodiversity means to their community with the important words written on the board. They will then create a piece of art on the topic of biodiversity.
Included in the resource is a link to a video recording of a Zoom conference attended by students from around the world that was held in 2024 to celebrate World Habitat Day.
World Habitat Day is a resource that was created with the aim of providing teachers with activities that would help them achieve outcomes related to biodiversity, ecosystems and endangered animals. This resource would be best used in an elementary to middle school Science classroom to mark World Habitat Day that occurs every year on the first Monday of October. However, this resource could be used at any time of the year.
