Words with Strings is a simple, introductory activity that emphasizes the need for collaboration in our efforts in making a difference with climate change.
Students work collaboratively in a group to write a word using one marker that is attached to many strings. The words are all related to actions that can be taken at home to combat climate change. The first time writing the word, the students complete the task without communicating. The students then write the word a second time and are allowed to talk. Debriefing occurs after the activity is completed, guided by questions provided in the resource.
The resource is best suited for the upper elementary Science classroom to help attain outcomes related to climate change, ecosystems and human impacts on the environment. It will be of particular help in emphasizing that mitigating the effects of climate change will require a unified and collaborative approach among the countries of the world.
