A project of LSF
What’s in the Water? explores the St. Lawrence River habitat and explains how and why scientists from the River Institute are using factors like temperature and conductivity to monitor water quality. The video illustrates how nutrient pollution can affect the ecosystem and what scientists are learning by studying the river’s population of yellow perch.
Included with the video is an activity in which the students become citizen scientists and monitor a local environment over time. The activity is supported by a PowerPoint or Google Slides providing pertinent background information on monitoring water quality. The students will interview a local citizen about changes they have noticed in a local ecosystem. Students will then create their own field journals using provided templates. Suggestions are also made for places they can share their observations.
The video is best suited for the middle school Science classroom to support the study of ecosystems, water systems and climate change. Along with the accompanying activity it could be used as an introduction to a longer project in which the students use their interview as a springboard to an investigation of an environmental topic. They could then use their field notes booklet to make observations and record data for their investigation.
