What are Eelgrass Meadows? K-6

These Green Ribbons Are More Than Meets The Eye

Elementary, Middle

Description

This resource is part of a collection of research features which bring local climate change research into the classroom. The research features enable teachers to integrate climate change research into their classrooms through fun, engaging and accessible research topics.

The What are Eelgrass Meadows? research feature provides teachers with background information and climate research on the importance of maintaining eelgrass meadows and their role in the fight against climate change. Maintaining eelgrass meadows is essential in providing habitat and food for marine species and humans who rely on them to absorb carbon dioxide. The resource discusses the research conducted by scientists in determining the functional diversity of the eelgrass meadows, allowing them to tell how easily the meadows will recover after disturbances.

Students will:

  • learn about functional diversity
  • understand the difference between taxonomic diversity and functional diversity
  • understand how disturbance can affect diversity

The resource provides a hands-on activity to enhance the learning about eelgrass meadows, information on the researchers taking part in this study, discussion questions and questions for the future.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The Discover Our Climate research features are relevant to Atlantic Canada and include curriculum-based learning activities designed for grades primary to six depending on the topic. Each feature encourages students to be curious and create solutions for the on-going climate challenges we face.

This research feature could be used in science classes to introduce the importance of habitat preservation, biodiversity and in particular, the value of the eelgrass ecosystem.
