Who knew whale poop could be so important! This video takes students to the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park to learn how Parks Canada scientists are studying whale ecology to understand the relationship between these amazing marine mammals and productive ocean ecosystems. Whales provide nitrogen and other nutrients to the phytoplankton that are crucial in absorbing carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. Pupils will understand that by protecting their habitats, we help ensure that whales will forever swim in our seas to continue their vital role in maintaining the health of our oceans and our planet.
This resource supports Grade 6-9 Science units exploring ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity and marine environments. The film highlights some of the research methods used to study wildlife ecology and the interdependence between healthy oceans and their climate regulating abilities. Students also become more aware of how habitat management and conservation protects sensitive species.
After viewing this film a class could develop an action project where they involve the school in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This program developed in partnership with WWF-Canada, uses thousands of volunteers to help remove pollutants like plastic from local community beaches which prevents this material from harming our oceans.
