Wetlands and Biodiversity

Secondary, Middle

Description

This video message highlights the threat to the second most diverse eco-system in the world –wetlands, and the need to conserve and protect them. Focusing on the staggering rate of disappearance of wetlands in Canada, it emphasizes the many benefits of preserving wetland ecosystems including their ability to moderate droughts and floods, store carbon, reduce carbon dioxide in the environment, clean water, and provide habitat for many plants and animals. Fun graphics and text in this animated video help to demonstrate how wetlands connect us all.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This clip could be used in introducing the importance of water, habitats, food webs and ecosystems in science classes at the middle level, or in examining human impacts on the environment in geography, social studies and environmental science classes in high school courses. It also could be used to stimulate discussions on how our own lifestyle choices have a direct impact on important ecosystems.
