The Impact of Microplastics on Oceans and Ourselves

Secondary

Description

In November 2016, a group of activists, scientists, photographers, filmmakers, and naturalists came together to investigate the impact of plastic pollution on ecotourism and communities around Bali and Komodo, Indonesia. The result is this video, which introduce students to the magnitude and impact of microplastics on the oceans.

General Assessment

Strengths

The resource is quite timely, given the increasing concern over the impact of microplastics on marine environments. The issue is likely to receive increasing attention as society becomes more aware of the implications of our use of plastics and how we should respond. The video serves to alert students to the significance of the issue and encourage further investigation.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The video may be used in an introductory role to raise student awareness of the threat posed by microplastics and thereby initiate further investigation. The topic has relevance for those units of study dealing with:

  • waste management
  • responsible or sustainable consumption
  • marine environments
  • responsible citizenship
  • STEM units that might explore alternatives to our use of plastics
  • government regulations and/or individual action
