Understand How Climate Change Affects Others

Elementary, Middle

Description

This role play activity develops student empathy and understanding as they explore the inequality of climate change impacts based on age, ethnicity, gender and wealth. Learners will also deepen their awareness of how hotter temperatures can increase the severity of issues like extreme weather depending on where a person lives. Just as global warming threatens the most sensitive living organisms in the natural world it also disproportionately impacts our most vulnerable humans.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This resource supports Social Studies and Science outcomes investigating connections between Earth and human activities. Learners will recognize that the socioeconomic costs of food insecurity, catastrophic weather and reduced access to basic needs compound the challenges of climate change. Students could research how Arctic indigenous communities are threatened by problems such as reduced sea ice or loss of traditional food species and express their concerns through a letter writing campaign to senior politicians.
