In this fourth video of a series that introduces young students to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, pupils learn how all children have the right to obtain an education that provides choices and opportunities as adults (SDG 4). However, as the film explains, issues such as poverty, gender inequality and unhealthy environments prevent many young people from receiving the schooling they deserve. Pupils also learn about innovative approaches to improving access to education in communities with limited resources. This film delivers an important message about the empowering value of education, and teaches students that if all children are able to learn our world will become much more equitable, stable and sustainable.
This resource supports Grade K-4 Social Studies lessons focused on human rights, common needs of children, and the connection between education and sustainability. Students also become more aware of how cultural differences in gender responsibilities and a lack of free public education prevent many children from attending school, particularly girls.
The video might become the basis of a classroom action project in which students organize a community fundraiser through the "Schools for UNICEF" program, which involves Canadian schools in helping children around the world with school supplies and resources. Information about registering a school in this citizenship project can be found here.
