Troop’s Run

Elementary, Middle

Description

In the third instalment of the environmental justice chronicles, the town of Forestville is once again threatened. This time the graphic novel focuses on the expansion of a nearby pipeline, a growing cause of concern for residents. The urgency stems from an election in which the front runner is being backed by a big corporation. Through positive action and a grassroots movement, Mayah and the neighbourhood once again show that climate justice can be obtained even when faced with a more powerful adversary.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

Troop’s Run is an engaging graphic novel well-suited for the upper elementary and middle school classroom. With its focus on a mayoral election, the story could serve as a springboard for research into lobbyists and the political process. Students could also write a follow-up to the story with the characters facing other challenges. Alternatively, the students could create their own story with the knowledge they gain from their election and lobbyist research.
