Finding Safer Alternatives to Hazardous Household Products

Description
Every day a multitude of products are used in our homes for cleaning, pest control and maintenance. However, many of these substances are extremely toxic to humans in addition to being harmful to the environment.
In this activity a fun game of bingo becomes a lesson in alternative choices. Students will learn that ecologically friendly products are equally effective to the harmful options promoted by manufacturers. We can easily have a safe, clean home without polluting the water or air on which we all depend.

This engaging activity offers a unique introduction to discussions surrounding health hazards at home and making earth friendly choices in consumption habitats. A key message of this resource is that change is relatively easy, and simple switches like using pump bottles instead of aerosol cans help protect the environment.
The game could also be used to introduce waste management concepts and explore the disposal of hazardous waste. A class could visit a waste collection facility and evaluate and describe the types of toxic materials with the goal of raising community awareness about harmful household products.
