The Voice of an Island

Elementary, Middle

Description

This book by Lupe Vaai demonstrates the current realities of climate change. Katalina, a determined schoolgirl, decides to take matters into her own hands. Growing up in a polluted environment, filled with dust and garbage cans, Katalina decides that this is not the future she wants for her family. She dreams of fresher air and green pastures, just like in her grandmother's stories! Thus begins her adventure to solve the problems of her environment: a journey that begins on her small island in the Pacific, and that propels her to New York, to demonstrate that no matter their size or age, everyone can have an impact on our planet.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This book would be a great addition to a lesson that aims to understand the urgency of climate change. In addition, this book can help guide students on how they can make changes in their community. Students can complete their own research on environmental issues such as rising temperatures and sea levels, rubbish burning, deforestation, destruction of the oceans and the coral reefs and climate change.
