Sustainable Ecosystems and Climate Change

Secondary

Description

This video explores the importance of native plants in maintaining healthy and sustainable ecosystems. Students learn about the critical roles that different plant species play in pollination, biodiversity, carbon storage, and wildlife protection. The video also showcases indigenous traditional ecological knowledge through the sharing of knowledge about medicinal plants, their uses and cultural significance. Students are encouraged to reflect on the connections between plants, animals, humans, and climate change, while developing a greater appreciation of their local environment.

A lesson plan to accompany this video is also available here.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video would be great in a science class during a unit on biodiversity, ecosystems, or climate change. It would be particularly relevant in the spring or early fall, when students can observe and identify plants in their local environment. The video is a great introduction to an outdoor activity, a survey of native species, or a discussion of indigenous traditional ecological knowledge and its contribution to our understanding of the environment.
