Something Beautiful

Elementary

Description

This book begins with a young girl reflecting on the “ugliness” she sees when looking around her inner city neighborhood.  In her attempt to find something positive within this urban landscape, she polls those around her on the things they see as beautiful.  The young girl is surprised by all of the things people value and vows to create something beautiful for herself.  She begins to make changes in her community while recognizing the beauty all around her.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This book will help students see that they too can make a difference in the world around them and encourage them to take action in their own communities.   Students may choose to reflect on their own classroom, the school or larger community to see the beauty that surrounds them  and identify ways in which they can contribute to this beauty.
