This video is part of the Black Climate Heroes series within a project called Drawdown’s Neighborhood. This project is a short documentary series focused on climate solutions that amplifies the voices of climate heroes who are often overlooked. It highlights the diverse community of individuals implementing climate solutions to make the world healthier and more sustainable. The Black Climate Heroes series honours the rich history of Black leadership in climate and environmental advocacy by sharing the stories of contemporary climate heroes. In this review, we will focus on "Repowering People, Planet, and Technology."
In this video, we are introduced to Emily Mauter, the Director of Advancement at Repowered, a non-profit social enterprise in Minneapolis, working to do just that by creating fair chances for people, the planet, and technology. Emily works to create new opportunities for electronics through recycling and refurbishing e-waste while simultaneously providing workforce development and reintegration opportunities for people who have experienced incarceration. As one of Minnesota's most prominent e-waste collectors, Repowered is also helping achieve drawdown and has processed over 40 million pounds of electronics to date, keeping e-waste out of our landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to a warming planet.
To support the video, the resource provides a series of discussion questions, links to learn more about the solutions in this video and ways to take action.
This video will provide an excellent starting point for those courses across the curriculum that address issues in sustainable development. Students could enhance their learning by developing solutions to the e-waste problem in schools, such as refurbishing or repairing for resale and presenting their solutions to teachers and peers. Students can also brainstorm ways to make a difference in their community to help alleviate climate grief or anxiety, which affects many students.
