Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Relay

Elementary, Middle

Description

Who says learning can’t be fun? Get active as you learn about the three ‘R’s’ of sustainable living. This active lesson will help students understand the difference between, reducing, reusing, and recycling. Students love any hands-on activity that will get them moving.

In teams, students will be asked to run to a base labeled with one of the 3 R’s. When the teacher reads out an action from the list of examples, the first person from each team must races to the appropriate base depending on the type of action it was. During this time, students will develop a better understanding when looking at the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The active relay approach can be used when introducing any concept related to the 3 R’s or can be adapted for consolidating knowledge of anything that can be categorised such as orders of vertebrates, states of matter, rock types, periods of history and so on.
