Protecting My Arctic Home is a literacy-based activity that allows students to explore how climate change is impacting life, culture and traditions in the North.
Students will read the first-hand account of Alexandria Abuzanuq Ivanoff, a young indigenous woman, who shares her way of life with the readers and explains how climate change has impacted her community and culture. Embedded in the text are "pause and reflect" opportunities for the reader to consider the information presented and connect it to their learning on a personal level.
After the reading is complete, the students will engage in a writing assignment that allows them to write their own narrative that illustrates how they have experienced change in their communities.
At the conclusion of the activity, students should be able to answer the question, "In the article, what was the author able to portray about the impacts of climate change on her environment by writing in the first person?".
