Meet "Pollinator Man", an environmental superhero who by day helps produce food and protect biodiversity and at night fights against dangerous villains like "Pesticide Boy" and "Climate Crusher"! Despite his protective bee costume and super strength, he needs help and urges young readers to become "Pollinator Protectors". As they join him on special missions like planting a native flowering plant, students help battle ecological crime and defend our environment. This entertaining graphic storybook teaches pupils about the causes of the decline in pollinating insects and other animals while raising awareness of why we must all care about these important creatures who are vital to life on Earth.
This book supports Grade K-3 lessons exploring animals, plants and their habitats while also building an understanding of how human activities impact the natural world. Students specifically learn how climate change, pesticide use, invasive species and disease have decimated pollinating insects like bees and butterflies. Pupils are also encouraged to become active participants in habitat conservation and teach others about why pollinators are so important.
One of the "special missions" asks students to create a small pollinator habitat with loose leaves, sticks and plants. This action can be extended into a school sustainability project in which a class works with members of a local gardening group to build and maintain a community pollinator garden. Students could assist with site preparation, seeding and planting native flowers, and with habitat enhancements like shallow ponds. "Pollinator Partnership Canada" has a guide for creating a pollinator garden, along with eco-regional planting guides. These resources are available here:
