During this lesson, students explore ways that they can make a difference to help prevent the spread of invasive species in a fun and interactive way. This lesson is divided into two parts.
Part 1: Play Your Part Mysteries
Students are given a slogan describing how people can take action to keep habitats healthy. After discussing its meaning in small groups, they review information related to the slogan by visiting a website that provides background information, short videos, examples of invasive species and methods to prevent their spread.
Part 2: Healthy Habitat Challenge
Students become 'Healthy Habitat Protectors' by brainstorming ways that they can take action to stop the spread of invasive species in their own community.
The topic of invasive species is both interesting and relevant and likely to be of greater concern as climate change and increased globalization heighten our awareness of and concern for the negative consequences of their spread.
The opportunity for students to take action by informing others further enhances the activity.
The lesson is easy to understand and includes multiple links to help educators become familiar with invasive species.
Examples of The Take Action campaigns are included to better understand how we can all play our part in preventing the spread of invasive species.
