Patterns in Nature is a resource that allows the students to explore seasonal changes in nature and how humans and animals adapt to these changes while also learning about simple coding techniques.
The activities begin with an introduction to patterns using various shapes. This leads to a discussion of patterns that can be found in nature. The class will then play a game of Simon Says. The students are introduced to the coding terms of "loop" (a repeating pattern) and "conditional statement" (if/then statements). Using an animal and seasonal changes, the students will create conditional statements and draw what occurs. The next activities use ScratchJr. that can be downloaded to a Smartboard or iPad. The students will work via the website to create a loop of the seasons and then a conditional statement dealing with the changes that occur.
Additional information and handouts for the activities can be found here.
Patterns in Nature is an engaging resource that introduces elementary students to initial coding concepts. The resource helps to address outcomes linked to patterns in Math while also teaching Science outcomes related to plant and animal adaptations.
