Mayah’s Lot tells the story of young Mayah and her community’s fight to protect their neighbourhood. This engaging graphic novel helps readers understand the concept of environmental justice while also showing the reader how to navigate the process of protecting a neighbourhood from apathy and from big corporations.  Mayah encounters many obstacles on her journey but her conviction shines through and with perseverance she takes action to successfully help her community.

Mayah’s Lot is an engaging graphic novel perfectly suited for the upper elementary and middle school classrooms. Students at this age are eager to help make the world a better place and this story gives them a general guide to taking action. The book could be used by the students to make a plan of action for their community on an issue of importance to the students. Students could also be inspired to write their own graphic novel based on a community concern or a follow up story with Mayah conquering another environmental justice issue.
