A project of LSF
From "marsh monsters" to a Tree Swallow air show, wetlands are fascinating places to explore nature. This digital guide that can also be printed, introduces students to the interesting plants and animals found in freshwater marshes, while highlighting the numerous environmental and human services provided by wetland ecosystems. With colourful photos and artwork, snippets of informative text and space for notes, this resource is a perfect accompaniment to a wetland field trip. Assisted by all of the information contained in "Marsh World", pupils can embark on an adventure of discovery where they observe and investigate the remarkable world above and below water to gain a true appreciation for why wetland conservation is vital to the health of our planet.
This resource supports Grade 4-9 Science units that are studying habitats, interactions within aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity and ecological relationships like food webs. Students will also develop an awareness of the ecosystem services provided by wetlands such as water purification, flood control and groundwater storage and replenishment.
By using this guide in conjunction with an investigation of a local wetland, teachers can strengthen the science process skills of pupils while fostering stewardship and appreciation for the natural world. Ducks Unlimited Canada provides many ideas and resources for wetland exploration and opportunities for student involvement in conservation on their education platform located here.
