Marine Litter

Elementary, Middle

Description

Surfrider's "Marine Litter" takes a close look at the origin of marine debris and its composition.  It explains via clips and interviews with specialists the problems that marine litter creates for the ocean environment. The video touches on issues such as food chains, invasive species and environmental impacts. The final message of action is that we can prevent marine litter by attacking the source: reducing waste production, reusing objects and recycling.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video supports the Science outcomes related to habitats and communities, interactions in ecosystems and freshwater and saltwater systems. The video could be used to initiate a shoreline clean up as a class or school as demonstrated in the video. Activities after viewing the video could also focus on reducing the amount of plastic produced by the class or school as a way to take action.
