A project of LSF
Each story in the Drawdown’s Neighborhood series serves as a bridge between climate solutions and people like you who are looking to tap into their own superpowers to stop climate change. In one of the videos from the Creatives and Climate Solutions series, Adam Hick's work focuses on simultaneously combating food insecurity and climate change by diverting food waste from farms to help the local community access fresh fruits and vegetables.
Food waste is a significant contributor to climate change, as it wastes the enormous amounts of water and energy that go into growing, harvesting, processing, transporting, and cooking our food. Furthermore, when food waste ends up in landfills, it decomposes and produces greenhouse gases, such as methane, which contribute to global warming. Many people experience food insecurity and lack access to fresh, healthy produce. The initiatives led by Adam aim to tackle these pressing issues by reducing climate emissions and addressing hunger. Donations to local food banks and shelters, provide millions of servings of fruits and vegetables to those in need.
To enhance the learning, the resource provides a series of discussion questions, links to learn more about the solutions in this video and ways to take action.
This video introduces students to the issue of food security. Students are encouraged to conduct background research on the food available in their local area, as well as learn how and where they can make donations to a food bank. This resource is suitable for helping students participate in World Food Day. It also aligns with curriculum outcomes related to food security, global hunger, climate change, and solutions for climate justice.
