How Does Climate Change Affect Biodiversity?

Secondary

Description

Local impacts can have global consequences. Humans are causing accelerating changes in the atmosphere, on land, and in the oceans. Life in these changing environments is tough for many species.

The video moves from an examination of the causes of climate change to a consideration of how climate change will affect biodiversity in both the plant and animal world and the link between the two.

General Assessment

What skills does this resource explicitly teach?

The video helps students develop those skills associated with

  • recognizing cause and effect
  • system thinking

Strengths

There are any number of good resources dealing with climate change but this resource fills something of a gap in connecting climate change with biodiversity. The resource provides some support materials for teachers and students.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The resource may be used in those units of study (Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, Social Studies) that examine the causes and consequences of climate change but has particular use for those units that focus on sustainability of ecosystems, habitat loss and invasive species.
