How Climate Change is Impacting Northern Food Systems is part of a compilation of local climate research from science heroes across Canada and climate actions that students can complete at home, in class or in the community.
In this research feature, students explore how climate change is rapidly impacting Northern Canadian ecosystems, which in turn affects food sources for the local communities. Research highlights the need for diverse approaches to effectively support adaptation plans in the face of climate change. Around Great Bear Lake, the community has noticed these impacts, and now are in need to prepare and adapt their food system to these changing conditions. The Déline community aims to enhance its self-sufficiency by relying more on local food sources and less on outside food shipments. This resource provides a few methods for students to preserve food and help reduce food waste.
The resource links to the Handpicked Podcast, where students can listen to podcasts that explore the importance of food sustainability research and how sustainable food system research can change how we produce, get, eat, and understand our food. Each episode includes show notes, educational materials such as discussion questions, a glossary of terms, and audio transcripts.

The research feature is an effective tool for opening a discussion about climate change in the Northern Communities. It explores the connection between the food we eat and our changing climate. It may be used in any high school course investigating climate change, agriculture/food issues/food security. Students can listen an episode of the Handpicked Podcast for a more interactive learning experience. Students could get involved with local food initiatives, such as community gardens or food banks, to understand the challenges and solutions firsthand. Students could explore Indigenous communities' traditional knowledge, which can offer valuable insights into sustainable food systems and adaptation strategies.
