A project of LSF
Do you think about your environmental impact when you replace a lightbulb, leave your computer on, or open the refrigerator? This activity encourages students and their families to examine electricty consumption by completing a simple home energy audit. With a worksheet, pupils check light bulb efficiencies, count electronics that use "phantom" energy, find drafts and measure fridge and freezer temperatures. This audit helps families reduce energy use through easy changes like unplugging unused devices, switching to LED bulbs or sealing window drafts. These steps lower electric bills and make homes more sustainable, while teaching students that small actions can make a big difference in cutting energy use and supporting a greener future.
This resource supports Grade 4-6 Science outcomes related to renewable vs. non-renewable resources, energy efficiency, energy consumption and technological innovation in electrical products. The activity also encourages discussions about sustainability, carbon emissions and climate change.
Students could use their home energy audits to create a school awareness campaign encouraging environmental action through "Lights Out". Classroom energy monitors could ensure lights are turned off in unused rooms, pupils could make posters to place by light switches and the class could create a school display featuring electricity conservation tips. This information could also be featured on the school website to encourage community involvement in energy conservation.
