Be a Healthy Habitat Hero!” is a compilation of activities where students engage in discussion and play interactive indoor and outdoor games to spark their curiosity and learn about the issue of invasive species and how they impact us all. Each activity provides inquiry questions to introduce the subject and open a discussion about invasive species. During the activity, students learn about and take action on invasive species. Healthy Habitat Hero Bingo - Students take part in simple actions to care for the environment and become Healthy Habitat Hero. Teachers can choose to complete some of the activities on the bingo card in a group setting. Students can complete some of the activities at home.
The Cute and Fuzzy Invader Takeover -In this activity, students watch videos of children asking their wonder questions about invasive species. Then students will play a fun and active game of tag to understand how a cute and fuzzy animal like the Eastern grey squirrel or European rabbit can spread quickly and cause problems to native animals and habitats. These activities will provoke inquiry about invasive species and how we can all play our part in being a Healthy Habitat Hero.
Who Dunnit - By playing a fun game of quiet observation and deduction, students learn how invasive secret stowaways, like Japanese beetles or insects hidden away in firewood, can be accidentally spread by people and cause damage to plants and trees in the places we love.
Be a Plant Detective - Students go outdoors to be plant detectives by observing closely and gathering clues about common plants. In doing so, students develop a greater awareness of the features and characteristics of plants, including invasive species.
These indoor or outdoor activities supports Science outcomes which focus on, plants, habitats and invasive species. Each activity provides inquiry questions to begin the learning, easy to follow steps, materials and extension activities to enhance the learning. Although the activities focus on invasive species in British Columbia, the activities can be easily adapted to any region.
