In this activity the students will be introduced to the concept of habitats through a read-aloud activity and discussion. The teacher will read the book Welcome Home, Bear by Il Sung Na. In the book, Bear searches for a new home by visiting all of his friends in their habitats. He soon realizes that his home is the perfect place for him. Through discussion questions the students make connections to climate change and its effects on the habitats of the animals.
This resource includes a link to a 'read-aloud' of the book via YouTube.
The resource Habitat and Climate Change is perfectly suited to the early elementary Science classroom helping to address outcomes related to habitats, climate change and responding to the environment. The activity can easily be expanded by asking the students to draw their favorite habitat from the story and then writing about it. They could also brainstorm ways to fight climate change as a class and then act on on their ideas. They could make posters to place around the school to educate others.
