Drawdown’s Neighborhood is a climate solutions short documentary series passing the mic to climate heroes who often go unheard. It showcases the diverse community of people using climate solutions to help the world become a healthier, more sustainable place. In the Representation Matters series, we explore the importance of making culture, identity, and language visible in discussions and teachings about climate change. This includes acknowledging Indigenous cultures, which have been deeply connected to the land and have acted as its stewards for many generations.
Trees are a critical solution for climate change. They help draw down carbon from our atmosphere, restore the land, provide a refuge in shade and shelter, and create important connections between people and nature. Clara Kitongo, who was born and raised in Uganda, is a program coordinator at Tree Pittsburgh. She takes pride in educating and empowering youth through the One Tree Per Child Program. Listen as Clara shares her story, how she found the power of her voice, and her passion to be part of the solution.
To enhance the learning, the resource provides a series of discussion questions, links to learn more about the solutions in this video and ways to take action.
Have students discuss the benefits of trees, followed by a reflection on the distribution of trees in their community. Engage students in a community tree planting or forest restoration project to create opportunities for education and engagement in climate change. Students can research various careers in Canada that focus on protecting forests and addressing climate change. They could investigate the actions being taken to safeguard trees, forests, and the forestry industry in light of global climate change projections, as well as explore ways they can contribute. Focusing on a specific aspect of climate change and forestry that interests them, students can embark on an inquiry-based action project in their school or community.
