This outdoor sensory activity encourages students to observe and explore in the forest. The resource focuses on the variety of colours as an entry point into a greater awareness and appreciation of biodiversity. Students receive paint sample cards with various shades of green. As they walk along the trail, they try to match the colours on the cards to natural features such as moss, leaves, lichens, ferns, etc… Remind students to not pick the plants or leaves. Students share their observations and reflections about the discoveries they have made and the diversity of living things.
An outdoor activity which encourages individual observation and exploration of the forest. This activity can be done in pairs. This activity can be adapted for the fall or in another environment such as a field or marsh where another set of paint sample cards can be used. Appropriate for grade three to six students.
