A project of LSF
Harvesting the power of the sun is fundamental to a world where traditional methods of generating electricity must be replaced by alternate non-polluting technologies. This short video and accompanying activity sheet introduces students to solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy, while also describing the benefits and challenges of solar power. As they answer the "Solar: fact or fiction?" questions, pupils will understand how sunlight can be captured to help meet our daily electrical needs, without contaminating our atmosphere with the harmful emissions that are causing climate change.
This video supports Grade 4-6 Science lessons that are exploring concepts related to renewable and non-renewable resources, energy forms and technological innovations in using alternative energy sources. The film also develops an awareness of the links between energy use, climate change and sustainability.
The power conservation message could become the theme of an action project in which a class develops and implements school-wide measures to conserve electricity. The organization, Energy Star, has a free downloadable student tool kit that offers ideas for improving a school's energy efficiency, evaluating cost savings and promoting the wise use of electricity. This guide is available on their website.
