The resource consists of four videos in response to the question, Why isn’t there more electricity produced by wind generation in Alberta. The first video introduces wind turbines (how they work; where they are located). The second video has two students identify and discuss the challenges represented by wind farms (lack of incentive given the availability of fossil fuels in Alberta and an economy built on fuel extraction; the inconsistency of wind power; costly infrastructure; aesthetic and noise impact). In the third video two students outline the environmental and economic opportunities represented by wind power (sustainable resource, no green house or other gases, low maintenance cost, green energy jobs). The final video involves a discussion among the four students that serves to review the challenges and opportunities.
The combination of videos strikes a balance in identifying the essential considerations that underline the debate with respect to wind power.
The video may be used as part of a larger discussion on renewable energy, climate change or sustainable development. It serves to introduce the debate around wind power and might be followed by assigning further research on each of the issues raised to teams of students who might then engage in a classroom debate or stage an “information session” for others in the school or community.
