Energy!

Elementary

Description

From the electricity that powers a home to the gasoline that fuels a school bus, energy is part of everyday life. This interactive digital REACH with STEM resource introduces students to key energy concepts, including where energy comes from and how it is used with an emphasis on comparing renewable and non-renewable sources. Short videos, interactive investigations, hands-on activities and reading comprehension challenges are guided by a curious Nutria character that captures the attention of young learners. With built-in student progress tracking available through free registration, this innovative tool provides a learning experience that develops student understanding of the relationships between energy use, renewable technologies and caring for our planet.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This resource supports Grade 3 to 5 Science learning focused on how electricity is generated, the differences between renewable and non renewable energy sources, forms of energy and energy use. The guided activities and engineering challenges, such as designing and building a windmill, helps strengthen STEM and science process skills including observation, creativity, and problem solving. The literacy components support English Language Arts outcomes related to analyzing text, responding to questions and building subject specific vocabulary. The integration of science and language learning also fosters critical thinking about links between alternative energy sources, responsible consumption and environmental health.

Students could extend learning into action with a school energy audit and awareness campaign which informs others how small, everyday changes can reduce electricity consumption. A class could collect data on how energy is used in their school, identify opportunities to conserve energy, and share simple energy saving actions through posters, announcements, or class agreements. “Green Learning” has online energy calculators by Province that students can use to determine energy consumption rates of devices in the school.
