A project of LSF
Current News: St. Lawrence River is an educational newsreel and activity from Ocean School, an environmental learning platform created by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and partners. The resource helps students explore current events and issues affecting the St. Lawrence River, including environmental threats and community responses. Students read and reflect on real news articles that discuss topics such as efforts to prevent invasive aquatic species, habitat restoration for at-risk species, and Indigenous advocacy for the river’s protection. The learning experience also encourages students to think critically about how perspective and bias in media reporting influence our understanding of environmental issues.
The resource includes a 10-minute newsreel and a 1.5-hour classroom activity suitable for grades 7–9, with connections to science, social studies, and concepts like sustainability, conservation, Indigenous knowledge, and climate action. It can be used as an engaging unit introduction, a case study for inquiry-based learning, or a discussion starter that encourages students to make connections between scientific knowledge, media reporting, and real-world environmental challenges facing Canada.
