Students examine two major global events, the covid epidemic and climate change. Through role play and investigation they learn that while there is no causal link between these two crises, knowing how they are interrelated can lead to finding solutions and build community resilience.
In part one, students learn about the causes and consequences of the pandemic and climate change through video, print resources and guided discussion. They conduct online research and look for connections between the two.
In part two, students take on the role of different individuals being impacted significantly by climate change and/or the pandemic. Based on the descriptions of what the characters they adopted are experiencing the students attempt to answer the question “who is responsible for creating these problems?” In a ‘show and tell’ format, each student shares how they have been impacted and how they may have contributed to either crises.
Having shared their individual stories, the class will try to come to agreement on who is responsible and what that means for achieving solutions.
The activity will add context to discussions of climate change and human health by showing our role in both causing problems and finding solutions. .
