Conservation Kids - Alternative Transportation

Elementary

Description

This video highlights all of the fun and active ways that kids can travel without a car.  The film also contains facts about exercise, greenhouse gases and the number of cars on the road in Canada.  The engaging youth ambassadors will motivate students to become more active while reminding all of us that sometimes we depend too much on our vehicles!

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video addresses the alternative transportation concept while encouraging a healthier lifestyle.  The resource supports health, science or social studies units that examine the human and environmental benefits of activities like biking to school.  As an Earth Day project a class could organize a school wide "Active Transportation" day that involves students, parents and teachers in travelling to school without cars or buses.  This event could also include the local community by inviting participants like the RCMP to promote safety.

Older students could examine how vehicle use affects environmental footprints and compare and describe sustainable transportation methods that are available in their community.
