Women in Climate Series

Secondary

Description

Drawdown’s Neighborhood is a climate solutions short documentary series passing the mic to climate heroes who often go unheard. It showcases the diverse community of people using climate solutions to help the world become a healthier, more sustainable place. The Women in Climate series offers videos centering the voices of some of the incredible women leading solutions in their communities and beyond. For this review we look at Climate Solutions & Equity Go Hand and Hand.

This video teaches students why climate change and equity go together; they are inseparable, and it is important to infuse those interconnections into our conversations, decision-making, and just solutions for the climate crisis. Erica Cochran Hameen has dedicated her career to addressing the intersections of climate change and social justice, and often in unexpected ways, through her role as an architect leading sustainable design and retrofitting existing buildings, and as a professor and researcher at Carnegie Mellon University. Through her groundbreaking and interdisciplinary work on equity, Erica is spreading the message that what architects and engineers do matter for closing the gaps on racial and economic inequities that exist in our built environment because it will result in more climate justice for all of us.

To support the video, the resource provides a series of discussion questions, links to learn more about the solutions in this video and ways to take action.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This video would be an excellent introduction to discussing the links between climate change and racial justice and why it is important to discuss these topics together. Have students brainstorm ways they could improve their schools and make them more sustainable, energy efficient and healthier for students. This video also connects with curriculum units that seek to understand inequities in the world and the challenges faced by different people.
