In this role-play activity students become part of a food web to learn that in ecosystems, living organisms interact and depend on each other others and are adaptable to specific climates and landscapes. Students will also explore how human actions and climate change impact biodiversity and why this is important.
There are materials provided for six different ecosystems depending on the students' grade levels and prior knowledge. There is also an option for the activity to be completed online.
This activity is geared toward the upper elementary and middle school Science classroom. It is well suited to address the curriculum outcomes linked to biodiversity, habitats and communities. An option to use this activity is to have the students complete the online version of the food webs first. Then complete the role-playing activity as a group in order to have a deeper understanding of the materials and allow the students to scaffold their knowledge.
