Climate Change, Health and Wellbeing Toolkit

Secondary, Middle

Description

The Climate Change, Health, and Wellbeing Toolkit, and webinar, outline the connections between climate change and health and wellbeing. This resource includes reflective questions and exercises to enhance students’ understanding of the topics discussed in the webinar. After listening to the webinar, students will:

  • identify the health impacts of climate change
  • recognize societal inequities that put certain communities at greater risk for adverse health effects due to climate change
  • brainstorm strategies to help communities become more resilient and better prepared for climate change
  • engage in coping with climate anxiety through a place-making exercise
  • research the climate change-related impacts on their favorite local places or homelands

The toolkit concludes with an extension activity that encourages students to forge connections with nature. Students will find an accessible outdoor space to explore for approximately 30-60 minutes. They will work through several prompts and record their thoughts and observations. These prompts will help students engage with their surroundings by looking, listening, smelling, feeling, collecting, and creating. Finally, students will reflect on their time in nature by responding to a series of reflection questions through writing or drawing.

This resource helps students manage health challenges and anxiety related to climate change by focusing on what they can control, incorporating mindfulness and self-care practices, and engaging in advocacy, which can help students cope with the emotional and psychological impacts of climate change.

To extend the learning, students can participate in climate action by volunteering with environmental organizations, advocating for policy changes, or adopting sustainable lifestyle choices. They can also prioritize self-care practices such as exercising, practicing mindfulness, and spending time in nature.
