A project of LSF
Yuck! That might be the first reaction when students hear they will be showing their feet for sustainability, but this entertaining activity carries a serious message. Climate change poses a growing threat to our planet, and it is crucial that we take steps to change our habits and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This hands-on craft invites students to reflect on their personal environmental impact by tracing the outline of their foot onto a poster and exploring their individual carbon footprint. Through creativity and fun, they will identify practical ways to conserve energy and reduce emissions, while developing a deeper understanding of how they can become thoughtful stewards of Earth's future.
This activity aligns with Grade 4-6 Science curriculum exploring the greenhouse effect, human impacts on natural systems and habitats, renewable vs. non-renewable energy resources and the relationship between weather and climate.
Engaging students in analyzing personal carbon footprints provides a framework for a stewardship project that promotes environmental action. By tracking individual tons of carbon dioxide produced before and after adopting reduction strategies a class could create a school display of their "footprints" with tips for saving energy. Climate Hero has a free, online tool available here that also has great ideas for youth involvement in sustainability.
