In this activity, students act out the carbon cycle. The goal is for them to visualize the changes that take place in the earth’s finite amount of carbon as it moves back and forth from atmosphere to hydrosphere to biosphere and to lithosphere. Students also consider how human disturbances such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation disrupt the carbon cycle and impact the world’s climate.
Students are provided with role play cards and a template to guide the simulation. Discussion questions help focus attention on key concepts.
Nutrient cycles are core concepts when teaching about ecosystems in middle and high school science. This simulation offers an experiential learning opportunity in addition to more traditional ones.
